Dedicated to the memory of Sally Seber

The Funeral Service for Sally will be held at Basingstoke Crematorium on Friday 18th November 2016 at 11:00am. We will also be holding a celebration of Sally's life later the same day at 1:30pm at Littleton Village Hall and would welcome your company. We will have a short ceremony with time for reflection and farewells at around 1.45pm followed by refreshments. Many people knew Sally and the Hall can accommodate more people than the crematorium. We are happy for people to attend just one or the other, and some will want to come to both. We also appreciate, as Sally would, that we will be in the thoughts of those unable to join us. We would love you to bring along your memories, thoughts and/or photographs of Sally to display at the Hall (or leave them with us at the crematorium if you are not joining us in the afternoon). It could be an anecdote, reflection, poem, picture etc, whatever feels appropriate for you. We will also bring your cards to display at the Hall (but please let us know if you would prefer we keep yours private). We would welcome donations to Cardiomyopathy UK instead of flowers. Directions: Basingstoke Crematorium Manor Farm, Stockbridge Road, North Waltham RG25 2BA Littleton Millennium Hall, The Hall Way, Littleton, Winchester, Hampshire SO22 6QL – download directions at http://www.littletonvillagehall.co.uk/Hiring.htm Just so you're aware, the M3 is going to be closed from junctions 2-3 from 9pm on Fri 18th until the Monday. It's not a problem as it won't affect travel on the Friday. But if you are travelling back late or staying over you should take a diversion. See http://surreyresidents.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Woodlands-Bridge-Demolition-newsletter.pdf. There are also rail replacement buses from Winchester to Basingstoke on the Sat/Sun if you are travelling by train.

Thoughts

I miss Sally's irreverent comments. Besides being very well-read, she enjoyed popular culture. She loved quoting from famous films or television programmes. A favourite speech was: "He's not the messiah. He's a very naughty boy!" When someone shot down her excellent suggestion during a meeting, she leaned over to me and whispered, "Is it cause I is black?"

I first met Sally in October 1969 when we started at Lady Margaret Hall. She was the first person I felt at ease with and we were soon putting exaggerated Oxford accents around the polished corridors of the college. We shared our life stories and many an essay crisis at midnight. Our friendship has continued over nearly fifty years and I will miss her phone calls, the visits to London and to Winchester, her kindness, her fun, and her very loud laugh.

When I started at Symonds it was Sally that I would go to if I needed anything. She was generous of her time and also knew everything! After a while it was her sense of humour that kept me going. I loved her often ribald humour and ability to cut through the nonsense. Sally's curiosity for the world around her and her interest in young people meant she never seemed old. Even in her last few weeks she would comment on something she had read or would pick up on the ambiguity of a phrase. Always a teacher- I learnt so much from Sally. It is her voice that I can still hear so clearly and although I miss her presence I often find myself visited by a phrase or saying or, more often, her laugh.
